John Hughes – Obituary

John_HughesJohn Michael Hughes, 42, of Mobile, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

John was born in Mobile, AL, on April 13, 1971, to Lee and Stephanie (Lee) Hughes. John graduated from McGill-Toolen High School where he was an all-star baseball player. He also received a B.S. in General Accounting from the University of South Alabama. John had a lifelong love of the water. He held the ranks of Divemaster and Open Water SCUBA Instructor. He also had obtained his U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license. As a successful businessman he traveled extensively but always returned to the place he loved, the Gulf Coast. In the last years of John’s life he wrote multiple books, including a children’s book called “Gumbo the Talking Manatee” and his personal memoir called, “Taming the Mania”. A favorite Bible verse of John’s was from the Epistle to the Romans, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.”

John was preceded in death by grandparents: William Lee, William Templar, Herbert “Buddy” Hughes Sr. and Mary Evelyn Hughes; and Uncle: U.S. Navy SEAL, Billy Lee. He is survived by his son: John-Paul “JP” Hughes, of Perdido Key, FL; Parents: Lee Hughes Jr. of Mobile, AL; Stephanie Lee Hughes of Mobile, AL; Brother: David Hughes (Latasha) of Mobile, AL; Nieces and Nephew: Lauren, Elianna and Nicholas “Big Nick” Hughes of Mobile, AL; Grandmother: Margaret Templar; and a host of loving family and friends.

A “get together” to celebrate John’s life will be held from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway. Services will follow at 6 p.m. in the Pine Crest Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NAMI or USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital.

At the moment in time that I enter the
realm of the One who made me;
I do not hope for any special kind of glee;
Nor do I really need a heavenly mansion’s key;
My only hope is that I enter the realm of the One who made me;
Forever sober.
