Kind of Funny

Posted on July 19th, 2015

Kind of funny when your kid
is more familiar with the local emergency room
than he is with the local playground.
Again I watch my little man
in a hospital bed x-rayed and scanned.

Check his trach, temp take,
tourniquet, thump thump,
“Ouch” he looks at me.
Find the vein, can’t miss the tears.
“Ouch Dad,”
Needle in skin, too many valves,
flush it now, blocked again.
Strapped in to scan, rolled back then
needle pulled out, try the other hand now.
Same tear, same squeeze, tracheostomy weeze,
“Ouch Dad.”
Whisper in his little ear, “I’m right here, not going anywhere.”
Forehead to forehead, my hand in his hair,
Tickle, tickle, hug, kiss,
“It’s okay son,” leaves my lips five thousand times.
“I know, I know,” flows like faucets opened wide,
inside I melted, outside I felt this
fake smile stretch taut across my face
to replace the frown of frustration
he does not need to see.

Again I watch my little man
in a hospital bed x-rayed and scanned.
Kind of funny when your kid
is more familiar with the local emergency room
than he is with the local playground.
